It is especially bad in our system when it doesn't matter how a teacher works to have a job or not. Students are not held accountable and teachers either. There is total caos!!!!

Hang in there and keep teaching. Perhaps someday things will get better. At least you have a great set up and you have the tools, know how to use them, and actually use them, so you make a big difference, but I feel bad for students that don't have…

The first point about the funds is a reality in our educational system. In my case the computer has helped me not have to use the board as often. I make handouts for my students. However I feel for those teachers who do not get the provision for the…

Yes, Ramon, this is what I wrote about before. Of course I am "teaching down". The system has placed 8 special ed students, with elementary skills of reading and writing. They have all these "rights" . I am thinking of dividing the class in two circ…

I fear that Puerto Rico is succumbing to an epidemic of teaching down, or shall we say, not teaching towards the standards given by the province. There are at least two groups that I teach which sorely lack the basic skills to survive their current…

Change the Grading System 5 Replies

Should the Department of Education change the current grading system? What if we did away with F's, D's, and C's and replace the current system with A+, A, B, and Incomplete? Think what that would do…

Culture Shock

What role does culture shock play, if any, in teaching English to Puerto Rican students? Do PR students readily embrace the learning of English?

Not Ready For School

I'm finding more students unprepared for their new levels. Seventh graders lacking basic grammar skills, ten graders not knowing what a thesis statement is or how to approach a research paper, and college kids dropping out in droves because "the system" failed them.

Wake up language teachers of Puerto Rico, let's stop teaching the grade level and start teaching the academic level. Of course, this is easier said than done. Too many different levels piled into every group. Teachers are forced to… Continue

Agree!!!!

The first point about the funds is a reality in our educational system. In my case the computer has helped me not have to use the board as often. I make handouts for my students. However I feel for those teachers who do not get the provision for their classes. The students with less material available will be at a disadvantage than the private school that have all the different materials. Well, now, because of this situation we are at a point that we have less material than last year.
Than the z… Continue

The Creation of Zombie Students

The lack of funds affect how educators teach students. In Puerto Rico, public school students are at a huge disadvantage from their private school counterparts. The inability to add to its resources, forces teachers to either use their own personal finances or work with what they are given. Any teacher without the proper economic means may be forced to teach utilizing ancient technology, such as the chalkboard.

While some private schools may move on to machines like projectors and Smart Boards,… Continue

A time to strike!

This time I am joining the group. I still remember guilty feelings for not joining other teachers during the last strike. Maybe if more teachers would have gotten together last time we wouldn't be in this situation now. Maybe this situation was inevitable. Anyway, I feel strongly about so many injustices occurring around me. The newspaper describes so many more. I can stay still no longer. I must get up and join the protests, the voices that are shouting so loudly to those in command. I want to… Continue
